Getting Organized Before You Move There’s no greater opportunity to get organized than when you’re moving. In the process of moving, you’ll be touching everything you own - wrapping it, boxing it, labeling it - so use it as an opportunity to decide if you really need the items you’re packing. Sorting is a MUST! No organizational project can be completed without sorting. Use these three main categories to sort your belongings before you pack them: - KEEP - Items in this category should be things you need and use often.
- DONATE - Donate items that are in good condition, but you no longer use.
- TRASH - Anything that is broken, missing parts, ripped or otherwise damaged should be thrown out. Don’t pack any trash – it doesn’t belong in your new home.
Think of your move as a fresh start for your belongings. When you’ve lived somewhere for awhile, whether it’s one year or ten years, you tend to accumulate “stuff.” If you don’t take time to sort through your “stuff,” it will only continue to accumulate in your new home. Take your new space into consideration when you’re sorting. Are you moving to a larger home with plenty of storage space, or are you downsizing to something smaller? If your new home is smaller, you will need to be selective about what you keep. A mistake I see many people make when they move to a smaller home is moving with the same amount of stuff they had in their former home. By following a few simple steps, you’ll find yourself organized and ready to make the move. Happy Organizing, |
