The Many Uses of Containers

Containers come in many different styles, sizes and materials. Although containers themselves may be different, the purpose of the container is always the same – to contain like items in one space, and keep those items from co-mingling with different items. Containers are a great way for different items to share space on a shelf, while still making it easy for you to locate the items.

A Shoe Box – Your Greatest Organizational Tool
In the process of getting organized, it is important to have the right containers to put things away. So many containers available can serve many different purposes. Take the ordinary plastic shoe box for example - it can house your favorite pair of shoes, or hold your baseball card collection. The plastic shoe box can be used in the garage to hold packets of seeds for gardening, or it can hold paint brushes when they are not in use. Try the Iris Medium Stacking Storage Box and you’ll see how one container can serve so many different purposes. Transfer dry goods from their package to a container with an air tight lid. This will provide the opportunity to stack containers, using vertical space, as well as keep your pantry items fresh. Containers that you would use in your pantry to store pasta or rice can also be used in the craft room to store buttons or ribbon.

A Great Gadget for Sorting
Another great use for containers is for the sorting process. Keep a medium-sized container in the bottom of each person’s closet in your home for placing items that no longer fit. Try the Iris 30.9 Quart Clear Plastic Storage Box for each family member. When the container is full, take it to the thrift shop to resell or donate the items. Return the empty container back to the bottom of the closet, and you are ready to start all over again.

Save Memories with Containers
Choose large containers with lids to use as memory boxes for your family members. Give each family member one container to store their personal trinkets and treasures. Regardless if it’s a paper they wrote for a class, or a medal they won, these memory box containers will protect their treasures and “keepsakes.” The Scrapbook Storage Box is a great start. Try a different color for each family member. With only one container for storage, each family member will need to be selective about what they keep and what they are willing to let go.

Use open containers or baskets to make it super easy for you to grab and go. These are great for the bathroom closet for example. You can have an open container that stores dental supplies, while another container can store nail supplies. Still another container can be used for medicines and another for hair supplies.

When purchasing and using any container, think outside the box so you can get the most out of your containers.

Happy Organizing,
