Organization for your “Home Office”

Everyone has a designated area in their home where they pay bills, organize papers and more. Sometimes it’s a true “home office,” other times it’s simply a dedicated space. Regardless, try these simple tips to make a difference in your “home office,” and you will be thrilled with the results!

Lose Post it Notes
Post it Notes are one of the biggest culprits of paper clutter. If you need to mark something in a book or document, then use a paper clip. Paper clips are re-useable, and the trees will thank you. If you need to make a note, then use a notebook. Post it Notes tend to get lost on a desk, but a notebook is harder to lose. Date each entry in the notebook so you can keep track of the information. Periodically go through the notebook and transfer addresses/phone numbers to an address book or palm pilot, or cross off “to do’s” that no longer need your attention.

Business Card Collector
Scan business cards into your computer and then throw them away. Business cards create clutter that will cut down on your productivity. Plus, when you scan them into the computer, they will be listed alphabetically or by service so they’ll be much easier to find.

Dry Erase Board
Use a dry erase board to make notes, and then erase notes that are no longer needed. The Magnetic Dry Erase Board helps prevent clutter from overtaking your office and is a great way to communicate with family members who are coming and going.

Create an In and Out Bin
The “in” bin can be a letter tray or a shallow box that allows you to hold onto items that need your immediate attention. The Silver Mesh 3 Tier Filing System is great because there are three compartments for filing. This is not a chance for you to pile up the papers. Once you reach the top of your shallow container, it’s time to purge papers, file what needs to be filed and shred what needs to be shredded. The same rules apply to your “out” bin. Use this for items that need to be handled outside of your home. Once it reaches maximum capacity, deal with the contents and move on.
