Taming Your Junk Drawer

This week, I visited a friend who just bought a new home. Of course I couldn’t come empty handed, so I arrived with one of my favorite organizational tools... the drawer divider.

I know she just moved in, but believe me, soon she’ll have a junk drawer like the rest of us. The junk drawer is one or two drawers in the kitchen that are overstuffed with... Well, junk! Kitchens are especially prone to junk drawers because the kitchen is often command central in a home.

Tips for Organizing the Junk Drawer:
First, I urge you to sort through the contents of the junk drawer and keep only what is truly needed. (Do you really NEED 50 packages of ketchup or expired pain reliever?) Once you’ve sorted and tossed out old items, it’s time to get some great products that can transform the junk drawer from chaos to order:

Junk Drawer Organizer
I use this item to help separate the small stuff in my drawers. Paper clips in one section, rubber bands in another. The divisions within the organizer make finding things easier and also create a space for each item, which is helpful when it’s time to put the item back. I love all the compartments in this particular junk drawer organizer, and I love that it’s so easy to clean.

Magnetic Basket
I know what you are thinking, “What does this have to do with organizing the junk drawer?” I’ll tell you, often times we have stuff inside our junk drawers that we could store in magnetic baskets stuck right to the side of the refrigerator. These magnetic wonders help free up space in the drawer and give you easy access to other items like scissors, pens and pencils.

Label Everything
Label each section of your drawer organizer to match the items in that section. You’ll find items faster and there won’t be a doubt in anyone’s mind where each item goes!

Happy Organizing!
