Libra is manufactured from Finnish spruce pine. This pine is a different species than the soft, knotty pine that is familiar to the American market. Due to a colder climate, the growing season in Finland is shorter. Trees grow more slowly creating tighter rings and a denser wood. Only the base areas of the tree are used for the shelving because this area produces fewer knots.

Pine planks are kiln dried to remove moisture and cut to size. The shelves have a notch cut which allows for the insertion of the end iron into the wood itself. These irons are then stapled into place. This stapling process is not a thin wire through paper type of staple. Rather, it is the process of punching a steel wire through the wood and iron to secure the end piece. (The staple marks on the under side of the shelf allow the customer to distinguish top from bottom)

In the production of the uprights, glue is used to secure the crosspieces. This glue is then allowed to cure. The finishing of the shelving product involves sanding and then the application of lacquer. Each shelf is double lacquered on the top and single lacquered on the bottom. (This is another way that a customer can distinguish top from bottom)

Libra is available in a traditional pine with a furniture quality lacquer finish. We now also offer the pine shelving in a honey colored stain finish. The natural pine is a classic but also very modern while the honey finish is a warmer, more traditional look.
